Punch Card: Goal tracker app prototype

Turning a trend into an app

Turning a trend into an app

Punch Card began with a New Year’s resolution trend I saw on social media: people made physical punch cards to track their goals and chose a reward for completing them. A card might challenge someone to read ten books, with one punch for each book finished and a new book as the reward. As someone who struggles to keep New Year’s resolutions, I was drawn to this playful way of making progress visible. I wanted to explore how the idea could become a customizable app with a social element.

Understanding the appeal

Understanding the appeal

I explored posts about the trend on social media to understand what people enjoyed about it. Two things stood out: making the cards was a fun craft, and punching them offered a fresh, satisfying way to track resolutions. These informal observations shaped my direction. I wanted the digital experience to retain the personal, playful appeal of a physical card while making it easier to customize goals.

Making motivation social

Making motivation social

The concept combines customizable digital punch cards with a social dimension. My aim was to make working toward a goal feel less solitary and give people another reason to keep going. I find goal-oriented hobbies more enjoyable and challenging when other people are involved, so I wanted shared motivation to be part of the experience. This is a design direction I’m exploring, rather than a proven outcome of the prototype.

Reflection and next steps

Reflection and next steps

I’m happy with the foundation of the interface and the visual polish I’ve developed so far. My next step is to give more attention to the distinctive, attention-grabbing details that could make the experience feel as playful as the original trend. Punch Card is still a work in progress, and I hope to develop it into a working app one day.
